SUMMARY:Special Screening of Just Mercy & Group Discussion
DESCRIPTION:“We all need mercy\, we all need justice\, and perhaps we all need some measure of unmerited grace.”\nBryan Stevenson\nJoin us for a special screening of the Warner Bros. film\, Just Mercy. \nMichael B. Jordan and Oscar-winners Jamie Foxx (“Ray\,” “Baby Driver\,” “Django: Unchained”) and Brie Larson (“Room\,” “Short Term 12\,” “Captain Marvel”) star in “Just Mercy\,” an inspiring drama that brings one of the most important stories of our time to the big screen. \nAward-winning filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (“The Glass Castle\,” “Short Term 12”) directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote\, based on Bryan Stevenson’s bestselling memoir. \n“Just Mercy” is based on the powerful and thought-provoking true story of young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard\, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead\, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation\, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first\, and most incendiary\, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx)\, who\, in 1987\, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl\, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the main testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow\, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings\, as well as overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter\, and others like him\, with the odds -—and the system —- stacked against them. \nJust Mercy is 2 hours and 14 minutes long. After the film\, attendees will have an opportunity to discuss the film in Zoom Break Out Rooms. \nDiscussion questions \nAfter a lifetime of fighting injustice\, Bryan Stevenson concludes: “The system treats you better if you are rich and guilty than if you are poor and innocent.” Is he right? \nIf we believe that the death penalty is broken\, what should we do about it?

SUMMARY:An Examination of the Death Penalty
DESCRIPTION:We need to talk.\n\nJoin St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and PADP for an examination of the death penalty. We’ll be screening the documentary film\, “In the Executioner’s Shadow\,” sharing information about the death penalty in our state and nationally\, and engaging in Q&A. \n“In the Executioner’s Shadow” casts a penetrating look at the consequences of the death penalty through three powerful stories – the rare perspective of a former state executioner who comes within days of executing an innocent person; a Boston Marathon bombing victim who struggles to decide what justice really means; and the parents of a murder victim who choose to fight for the life of their daughter’s killer. As the battle to overturn capital punishment comes to a head in the U.S.\, this provocative film challenges viewers to question their deepest beliefs about justice. The film illuminates the oft-hidden realities entangled in death row\, the death penalty\, and the U.S. Justice system at large. \nSunday\,  March 17\, 2019\, from 4 – 7 PM\nSt. Paul’s United Church of Christ\n126 Williams Grove Rd. \nMechanicsburg\, PA \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-examination-of-the-death-penalty-tickets-54440191077 Pizza will be served. RSVP so we’ll be sure to have enough to go around. \nThe breaking news out of California makes this the perfect time for this important conversation. Today\, Governor Gavin Newsom took the historic step of declaring a moratorium on executions in California. Four other states have a moratorium in place — Colorado\, Oregon\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington. The 737 California death row inmates represent over one-quarter of all those on death row in the United States. Just over four years ago\, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf declared a moratorium on executions until any deficiencies identified by the recently-released state governmental study on capital punishment were resolved to his satisfaction. Governors Newsom and Wolf both pointed to concerns about racial bias\, unfairness\, inadequate defense counsel\, and the risk of executing an innocent person. Five people have been released from California’s death row due to innocence. In Pennsylvania\, that number is six. \nNationally\, two of the five largest death penalty states – California and Pennsylvania – have not executed anyone in more than a decade. Overall\, more than one-third of those now on death rows across the United States (34.1%) are incarcerated in states with gubernatorial moratoria — California\, Colorado\, Oregon\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington. \nThis latest moratorium illustrates the decaying state of capital punishment. The death penalty has been disappearing\, both in law and in practice\, from the United States. Ohio Governor Tom DeWine put executions on hold this month to prevent the state from participating in torture. Last year\, Washington State’s Supreme Court declared that the application of capital punishment in that state was unconstitutional.

SUMMARY:An Examination of the Death Penalty
DESCRIPTION:The Unitarian Church of Harrisburg and Pennsylvanians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty invite you to join us for An Examination of the Death Penalty.  The evening includes a documentary film screening\, an update on our state’s death penalty system\, and audience Q & A. This is a free event and open to the public. Please register in advance. \nIn the Executioner’s Shadow takes a penetrating look at the consequences of the death penalty through three powerful stories. A former state executioner comes within days of executing an innocent person; a Boston Marathon bombing victim struggles to decide what justice really means; the parents of a murder victim choose to fight for the life of their daughter’s killer. This film challenges viewers to question their deepest beliefs about justice. \nThe Study Commission and Advisory Council on Capital Punishment in Pennsylvania released its long-awaited report in June of 2018. It highlighted numerous systemic flaws in the administration of the death penalty\, including the risk of executing an innocent person. The committee’s analysis indicated that systemic problems with the death penalty persist\, including geographical disparities\, a lack of adequate representation for poor defendants\, and high costs to taxpayers. It’s time to take a closer look. \nLet’s talk about it.
