On January 17\, 1977\, Gary Gilmore\, a “volunteer” for execution\, was killed by a firing squad in Utah\, in revenge for his murders of Ben Bushnell and Max Jenson.  Forty years later\, despite a growing trend away from the death penalty\, the U.S. has exterminated over 1\,400 more prisoners since Gilmore\, and continues to do so\, with nearly 3\,000 more on death row today. \nThe Abolitionist Action Committee is an ad-hoc group of individuals committed to highly visible and effective public education for alternatives to the death penalty through nonviolent direct action.

SUMMARY:Pennsylvania Council of Churches - 2016 Shalom Conference
DESCRIPTION:Peacemaking and advocacy work can be lonely work. \nThe Pennsylvania Council of Churches is hosting its first ever “Shalom Conference” on September 24-25 at the Hartman Center (a UCC camp\, conference\, and retreat facility) in Milroy\, PA. The Council’s goal is to launch a statewide network of peacemakers that will promote communication and sharing to make peacemaking less lonely. \nOur theme\, “Creating a Culture of Peace\,” focuses on shalom—a holistic sense of peace that seeks wholeness and wellness for all of creation. This broad understanding of peace suggests that a broad representation of organizations and individuals is necessary to ensure that our vision for peace is more than the absence of war. Organizations and peacemakers that focus on a range of issues\, including\, but not limited to\, domestic violence\, systemic racism\, drone warfare\, environmental justice\, torture\, gun violence\, and interfaith understanding\, will all be invited to participate in this exciting conference.  The conference will consist of panel discussions\, large group gatherings\, two engaging speakers and numerous opportunities for people to network with one another.  \nOne of the speakers is Shane Claiborne\, a PADP board member. \nShane Claiborne is a Christian activist\, author\, speaker and a founding member of the Simple Way Community in Philadelphia. Among his many books are The Irresistable Revolution\, Jesus for President\, and his most recent book (released in June 2016)Executing Grace.

DESCRIPTION:The special guest speaker will be Amy Krone Wilkinson\, the sister of Pennsylvania native Ray Krone\, who was sentenced to death in Arizona for a crime he did not commit. DNA evidence proved his innocence and Ray become the 100th person to be exonerated after being sentenced to die in the US. \nThe two winners of this year’s Polly Underwood Memorial Scholarship will read their essays and PADP staff will provide an update on the state of the death penalty here in PA and across the country. \nYou may purchase your meal at the door.
