Racism and the Death Penalty

November 14, 2020 @ 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm

Curtis Flowers spent 23 years on Mississippi’s death row. He was tried six times by a racist prosecutor before the US Supreme Court stepped in to save his life. Our panelists will share their unique perspectives on the inextricable link between lynching and the modern-day death penalty.

Henderson Hill, Senior Counsel at ACLU Capital Punishment Project, is a long-time leader in the death penalty abolition movement. He successfully represented Curtis Flowers at the US Supreme Court. A prolific writer, an in-demand speaker, and a revered movement elder, Hill has mentored many of our up-and-coming leaders.

Ngozi Nduluwe, Senior Director of Research and Special Projects at Death Penalty Information Center, is on the frontlines in the battle against racism in our criminal legal system. Her work includes criminal defense, policy-making, research, and public education at organizations as different as the US Federal Government and the NAACP. Ms. Nduluwe is one of the authors of the Death Penalty Information Center’s groundbreaking report, Enduring Injustice: the Persistence of Racial Discrimination in the U.S. Death Penalty.
